Introduced by Rep. Farr (D-CA), the “Truth in Trials” Act would enable individuals facing federal prosecution for marijuana-related offenses to provide evidence during trial demonstrating that they were acting pursuant to their state’s duly enacted medical marijuana laws. Currently, those facing federal marijuana charges are not allowed to mention in court whether or not their conduct was legal under their state medical marijuana laws. The bill would restore fundamental fairness in federal trials concerning the use or provision of cannabis solely for medical purposes in accordance with state law. As of September 29, 2014, the bill has 16 cosponsors, but has not had a committee hearing.
